About Us

Over the years, a new sacristy was added; cottonwood trees were planted near the plaza; and twin bell towers, a pitched roof of corrugated steel, electric lights and gas wall heaters helped modernize the old building. Even so, although the old church served the parish for almost one hundred years, by the 1950s it became obvious that a larger structure was needed.

In November of 1961, the congregation, several paintings and the original bulto (three-dimensional statue) of San Ysidro moved to a newly constructed church on Corrales Road. The reredos, (wood altar screen) behind the altar was created by Max Roybal and features an  El Cristo Crucificado  (painted image of Christ Crucified); the bulto of San Ysidro; and retablos (painted representations) of St. Jude (patron of hopeless causes); St. Peter (first Pope and patron of church unity); Our Lady of Sorrows (patroness of women in childbirth); St. Rita (patroness of marital fidelity); St. Liberata (patroness of liberated women); St. Veronica (patroness of photographers and laundry workers); St. Ignatius of Loyola (patron of Jesuits and mentor of Penitentes); and San Acacio (patron of military protection against intruders).

Previously functioning as a Mission Church of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in Bernalillo, San Ysidro was inaugurated as a parish and received its first full time pastor in 1966. Since then, it has been fortunate to be guided by several exceptional pastors:

Right Reverend Tito Melendez (September 1, 1966)

Right Reverend Ambrose Burgmeir (February 26, 1970)

Reverend William B. Homola (June 1, 1971)

Right Reverend George V. Rieffer (March 12, 1972)

Reverend Theodore Isaias (August 10, 1980)

Very Reverend Lucian C. Hendren (July 10, 1984)

Reverend Clarence F. Galli (January 15, 1997)

Reverend James L. Vance (January 22, 2006)

Reverend Michael DePalma (july 1, 2010)
